Hey, as "old hippies", we were at the Notodden Blues Festival to check out, tape and film some of the music from the U S A, have a good time and on a personal level, hang out with the Sebastians. Our brief was simple, but included "Check out the local music". Look what we found!
Got to meet up with C J Chenier and The Red Hot Louisiana Band, playing that afternoon, say hi to the guys, clear things with the NBF crew.
Hey who are these guys?
Terry Lehns took to the stage. In only moments, the packed audience were on their feet. They obviously knew something that I didn’t! The appreciative crowd were most definitely on the band’s side right from the word go. This is definitely "feel good music".
The guys play to packed out houses wherever they go. The style is all Terry Lehns. The musicianship of the band makes it possible to combine styles and moods into what was a superb concert in the sunshine. Moving effortlessly and with great humour from R& B to what a friend, Roger McGuinn (yes that RM!), would call "Folk music with a Beatle beat", through to pure Celtic folk music, Cajun, Country & Western, the band’s "tour d’ force" through the repertoire of the set was breathtaking. They left a very "high" bunch of people, Radio Woodstock at the fore front wanting more.
Radio Woodstock wanted and needed to find out more about Terry Lehns! Backstage the band were so kind, a great bunch of guys and eager to spread the "feel good factor" of their music. I feel fortunate to call them all friends.
Hey if you’re lucky enough to live in Norway, I guess it doesn’t need Radio Woodstock to tell you about Terry Lehns. If for some inexplicable reason you don’t know about Terry Lehns and I can’t imagine why you don’t, check out their web-site www.terrylehns.net and get yourself down to a Terry Lehns gig.
Hey you guys are lucky, not only can you check out the web-site, but what is really wonderful is that Terry Lehns has a CD out on "Bluestown Records" called "LOBSCOUSE"
Lobscouse, so I’m reliably informed is a traditional sailor’s stew with a mix of ingredients tossed into the pot!
Lobscouse is truly Terry Lehns. It is Terry Lehns’ musical lobscouse.
It combines an eclectic mix of all the ingredients that you associate with Terry Lehns delivered with fine musicianship
A re-working of Robert Johnson’s "Crossroads" opens the CD. Pacey banjo gives this a Country and Western feel. This C & W flavour is continued with the Lindisfarne classic "Kings Cross Blues".
"So long" is a piece of selfmade folk/rock, gentle and easy on the mind.
A faithful and respectful version of Neil Young’s " Human Highway", shows how broad a spectrum Terry Lehns work within.
"Too much Fun" is a C J Chenier shuffle. Try keeping still to this. "Las Vegas", "Crusader", "Star of the County Down" and "Low Lands of Holland" all draw upon the bands Traditional Celtic / folk influences. Uplifting, stirring lyrics, singalong lines, a gentle ballad, flute, pipes, banjo all create an evocative atmosphere of ceilidhs in Dublin’s back bars
"You’re so Fine" is pure pop. "Nick Lowe dating Ry Cooder’s "Little Sister", a few minutes of delight.
The CD ends with a "Quirky" version of the Elvis classic. "Can’t Help Falling in Love" given an Irish marching band feel, a fun way to end "Lobscouse".
Lobscouse deserves and will get a wider audience. Terry Lehns have come up with a CD full of well crafted songs and fine musicianship, which is truly "transatlantic".
It will not be long before Terry Lehns, the band will be seen and heard out side of "Bluestown". So, while you have the chance, get them down to your club, give them a call!
